FIRST ALLOWED TRACK 1 PATENT APPLICATION PROSECUTED BY S&S January 11th, 2012
The USPTO recently instituted a program for accelerated examination, referred to as "Track 1." The USPTO's press release describing the program can be found here. The goal of this program is to expedite prosecution of cases to a final decision within 12 months of filing. Shumaker & Sieffert is proud to announce that the first patent allowed under this new program was prosecuted by attorneys at Shumaker & Sieffert. Dennis Crouch wrote an article on Patently-O summarizing the Track 1 program and the prosecution history of this patent.
KENT SIEFFERT GIVES PRESENTATION ON THE AMERICA INVENTS ACT November 29th, 2011
On Oct. 11, 2011, Shumaker & Sieffert principal, Kent Sieffert, delivered a presentation to the Minneapolis chapter of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) on the America Invents Act, recently signed into law by President Obama. Kent presented on the significant changes to US patent law brought about by the Act, as well as potential strategies for patent practitioners and portfolio managers as the law becomes effective over the next 18 months.
JENNIFER ROGERS CHOSEN AS VISITING ALUMNA November 17th, 2011
Shumaker & Sieffert attorney Jennifer Rogers was chosen as the University of Minnesota, Morris 2011–12 Joseph J. Latterell Memorial Visiting Alumna. As the Latterell Visiting Alumna, Rogers visited the Morris campus and met with students and faculty of the Division of Science and Mathematics on October 25-26, 2011. Rogers delivered an evening lecture entitled "From Physics on the Prairie to the Practice of Patent Law," about her career path and Morris’s impact. For more information, visit this article.

To date, the law firm of Shumaker & Sieffert has over 1000 patents issued listing the firm as the representative, and over 1300 published patent applications. Attorneys of the firm have also assisted in the preparation and prosecution of many applications filed directly by others.
NEW ATTORNEYS AND SUMMER ASSOCIATE JOIN SHUMAKER AND SIEFFERT July 11th, 2011
Shumaker & Sieffert has recently added several new attorneys, including Matthew Evans, Bryan Erickson, Al Vredeveld, Marsha Pernat, Sam Srinivasan, and Kerry Creeron. The attorneys will focus on patent prosecution and infringement counseling.

Wes Schwie also recently joined the firm as a summer associate. Wes will assist the attorneys of Shumaker & Sieffert in the electro-mechanical systems and medical device areas.

Shumaker & Sieffert is proud to be a founding member of the USPTO Pro Bono Initiative Minnesota Pilot Program. The Program aims to provide pro bono legal assistance to qualified pro se patent applicants before the USPTO. The attorneys of Shumaker & Sieffert look forward to the opportunity to assist the independent inventor community of Minnesota with patent-related legal assistance.
AIPLA SPRING MEETING 2011 May 14th, 2011
Steve Shumaker, Kent Sieffert, Jessica Kwak Rauckman, Darcy Grunwald, and Brian Dawley recently attended the AIPLA Spring Meeting 2011 in San Francisco. They attended many interesting sessions and had the pleasure of reconnecting with colleagues and meeting attorneys from across the country and around the world. Brian also had the opportunity to assist Mr. Christopher Palestro of Hewlett-Packard Company in preparing a paper in support of Mr. Palestro's presentation at a joint session between the Electronic and Computer Law Committee and the Special Committee on Standards and Open Source regarding open source software transactional due diligence. The paper is available from the 2011 Spring Meeting Materials of the AIPLA website.

Shumaker & Sieffert, P.A. was ranked the top firm in the United States in patent quality for the Healthcare industry by Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Magazine. IAM ranked law firms according to patent quality scores generated by Ocean Tomo Patent Ratings. The rankings appear in the May/June 2011 of IAM, in the article “Quality Counts: Kings of Quality.” Steve Shumaker, co-founder of Shumaker & Sieffert, is also quoted in the article. The firm moved up to take the top spot in the 2011 rankings after also being listed by IAM and Ocean Tomo Patent Ratings in 2010.
