Four new associates recently joined Shumaker & Sieffert. Darcy L. Grunwald (BSEE/JD) and
David Priem (BSEE/JD) will support firm clients in the electronics, software and telecommunication areas.
Ryan Kobs (MS BME/JD) will assist the firm’s medical device practice.
Christopher Karlen (BBA IS/JD) will support clients in the software and e-commerce areas. All four associates will focus on patent prosecution and infringement counseling.

H. Sanders Gwin, Jr., was a featured speaker at the AIPLA Boot Camp (“practical prosecution training for new lawyers”) in Alexandria, Virginia on August 25, 2010. Sanders discussed legal issues relating to patent inventorship, and has presented at the AIPLA Boot Camp for the past five years.

STEVE SHUMAKER DISCUSSES BILSKI AT LES

On Aug. 17, 2010, Shumaker & Sieffert principal,
Steve Shumaker, delivered a presentation to the Minneapolis chapter of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) on the recent Bilski v. Kappos decision by the United States Supreme Court concerning patent subject matter eligibility. Steve discussed the recent history of subject matter eligibility under the Patent Act, and the potential impact of the Bilski decision on inventions relating to software, e-commerce, business methods, and medical diagnostic processes.

To date, the firm has over 700 patents issued listing Shumaker & Sieffert as the representative, and over 1200 published patent applications. Shumaker & Sieffert was proud to sponsor the 2nd Annual Wooly Run in St. Paul, MN. The Wooly Run is a charity 5K run that supports the efforts of Medicine for Sick Children - a local foundation that provides medicines and medical supplies directly to needy children and pediatric clinics in some of the poorest countries in Africa. True to the run's name, 13 employees and friends of the firm braved the unseasonably chilly weather to run for the cause.

Kent Sieffert are teaching Patent Practice as a seminar at the
University of Minnesota Law School. This is the ninth year that Steve and Kent have taught the seminar as adjunct professors. The seminar focuses on preparation and prosecution practice of U.S. and foreign patent applications, as well as patent portfolio management strategies.
