Shumaker & Sieffert is pleased to welcome new patent attorneys, Carlos Espinoza, Derek Abeyta, Tim Loomis, Jay Potts and Rod Lacy.  Carlos is an experienced attorney with a practice directed to drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the software, computing and telecommunications arts. Previously, Carlos was with the law firm of Morrison & Foerster LLP in Los Angeles, and worked for several years as a software engineer.  Derek focuses on patent prosecution in the electronics, software, telecommunications and medical device arts.  Previously, Derek was with the law firm of Knobbe Martens in San Diego, and worked as a control systems engineer for Honeywell Aerospace. Tim’s practice emphasizes patent prosecution, patent portfolio strategy, IP policy, licensing and infringement counseling in the electronics and software fields.  Previously, Tim served as VP & Legal Counsel for IP Policy and, earlier, VP & Chief Patent Counsel, at Qualcomm.  Jay brings several years of experience in patent prosecution and counseling, previously serving as a patent attorney with the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense, Naval Postgraduate School.  He is also a former United States Naval Officer.  Rod has been a patent attorney for over 25 years.  His practice includes drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the computer arts. Prior to his legal career, Rod was a software engineer.
