Professional Experience

Jim is a U.S. registered patent attorney and licensed attorney in Minnesota.  He started his electronics education in U.S. Navy Submarine Service where he graduated at the top of his class in basic circuit theory and design and third in his class in navigation electronics.  He went on to graduate with distinction from Iowa State with his degree in Electrical Engineering and then with honors from Drake University Law School.  Jim worked for a large general practice firm in Minnesota where he was named “Rising Star” in Minneapolis Law & Politics magazine in 2005.  He also spent time with a small boutique patent firm before joining Shumaker and Sieffert.

Jim has extensive experience in preparing and prosecuting U.S., PCT and foreign patent applications in a wide variety of electronic, electrical, computer science and mechanical arts.  He is proficient in preparing and interpreting infringement, validity and patentability opinions, licensing, agreements and litigation documents.

Jim’s intellectual property experience includes a broad technological range including: data processing, circuit design, semiconductors, superconductors, computer hardware/software, digital signal processing/communications, digital microelectronic design, Internet technologies, communication protocols, VoIP, military communications/electronics/software applications; pacemakers, defibrillators (implantable and external), implantable device batteries,  implantable device delivery therapy including various software implementations of delivery therapies; vehicle body structure (snowmobile, ATV, PWC, motorcycles), vehicle motor operation and optimization, vehicle lighting, breaking and steering, and vehicle control optimization (all including computer control and software implementation for optimization and control).
